Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Women’s Euro after a dramatic 1–1 draw against Finland, with Switzerland becoming the focus of celebration thanks to a last-minute goal by substitute Riola Xhemaili.
Finland took the lead in the 79th minute through Natalia Kuikka’s well-placed penalty, putting pressure on Switzerland, who only needed a draw to move into the next round. Finland, on the other hand, needed a win to stay in the tournament.
As the clock ticked into injury time, Switzerland looked set to exit the competition. But Xhemaili, coming off the bench, rescued her team with a close-range finish that brought the match level. Her goal not only saved Switzerland but also wrote a new chapter in their football history.
With this result, Switzerland and Finland both ended the group stage with 4 points. However, Switzerland progressed due to a better goal difference, finishing second behind Norway, who topped the group with 9 points.
In the other group match, Norway defeated Iceland 4–3 in a high-scoring thriller. Signe Gaupset and Frida Maanum each scored twice for Norway, sealing their perfect group-stage run.
This draw marks a significant achievement for Switzerland, who are now set to play in their first-ever quarterfinal at a major women’s tournament.
