Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 jersey in tribute to Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident alongside his younger brother. This is the first time in Liverpool’s history that a player’s jersey number has been retired. The club made the emotional decision to honor Diogo Jota’s contribution during the 2024–25 season, which saw Liverpool win their 20th Premier League title.
“In memory of Jota’s vital role in our title-winning season, we are retiring the No. 20 shirt,” the club stated.
Diogo Jota’s final goal came during the Merseyside derby in April. Scoring in front of the Kop stand, that goal became a powerful moment etched in the memories of fans. He was just 28 years old when the tragic accident occurred in Spain, taking both his and his 26-year-old brother André Silva’s lives.
Born in the small Portuguese town of Gondomar, Diogo Jota started his football journey with Paços de Ferreira’s youth academy. His talent led him to Atlético Madrid in 2016, followed by loan spells at Porto and a breakthrough run at Wolves before joining Liverpool. During his time at Anfield, he won the FA Cup, League Cup, and played a key role in securing the 2024/25 Premier League title.
In addition to his club success, Diogo Jota represented Portugal in multiple tournaments, including winning the UEFA Nations League in both 2019 and 2025.
The decision to retire Diogo Jota’s No. 20 jersey is a heartfelt gesture that underlines his impact both on and off the pitch. As Liverpool mourns his loss, fans around the world continue to celebrate his legacy.
