Harry Brook Replaces Joe Root as No.1 Test Batter in ICC Rankings

England’s star batter Harry Brook has climbed to the top of the ICC Men’s Test batting rankings after a match-winning performance against India in the Birmingham Test. Brook scored a commanding 158 runs in the first innings, helping him gain a total of 886 rating points, surpassing teammate Joe Root. This isn’t the first time Harry Brook has led the Test rankings—he previously held the top spot briefly in December 2024. However, this latest innings cements his place as the world’s No.1 Test batter.

While Brook’s rise made headlines, India’s captain Shubman Gill stole the spotlight in the same match with a historic performance. He scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 161 runs in the second. Gill is now only the second player in Test history to score more than 150 runs in both innings of a Test match. His total of 430 runs is now the second-highest individual match score in Test cricket history. This performance lifted Gill 15 places up to a career-best 6th position, after starting the series at 23rd.

Several other players also made significant moves in the latest ICC Test rankings. England’s Jamie Smith entered the top 10 in batting for the first time, while Ravindra Jadeja climbed to 39th. On the bowling side, Mohammed Siraj jumped to 22nd, and Akash Deep, after taking 10 wickets, leaped 39 places to 45th.

South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder impressed with a record-breaking 367 not out against Zimbabwe, setting the highest Test score by a South African batter. He also picked up three wickets in the same match. This all-round performance moved him to 22nd in batting (from 73rd), 48th in bowling (from 58th), and 3rd in the all-rounder rankings (from 22nd). Across two matches, he has scored 531 runs and taken 7 wickets.

Other rising players include David Bedingham, who reached 43rd in batting, and bowlers Luan-dre Pretorius and Corbin Bosch, who moved up to 60th and 51st respectively. From the West Indies vs Australia Test in Grenada, Australia’s Cameron Green and Beau Webster improved to 45th and 50th in batting. West Indies batters Roston Chase and Brandon King reached 81st and 83rd, while bowlers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph climbed to 29th and 31st after impressive performances.

With so many standout performances, the latest ICC Test rankings reflect a thrilling phase in international red-ball cricket—topped off by Harry Brook taking the No.1 Test batter title.
