Italy has officially appointed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach of the national football team, replacing Luciano Spalletti after a string of disappointing performances.

Spalletti stepped down last week after Italy’s 3–0 loss to Norway earlier this month. The defeat added to growing concerns about the team’s recent struggles and ultimately led to his resignation.

Gattuso, aged 47, earned 73 caps for Italy during his playing career. He was part of the squad that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and now, nearly 20 years later, he returns to the national team in a managerial role.

Despite winning Euro 2020, Italy failed to qualify for the last major tournament and also missed out on the past two FIFA World Cups, highlighting a period of instability for the Azzurri.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that Gattuso will be officially introduced at a press conference on Thursday. FIGC President Gabriele Gravina expressed full confidence in him, stating, “Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. His inspiration, professionalism, and experience will play a crucial role in facing the challenges ahead.”

As Italy’s new head coach, Gennaro Gattuso is expected to bring his signature passion and leadership to the dugout, with hopes of guiding the team back to international success.
