In a surprising Group B match of the FIFA Club World Cup, French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil’s Botafogo FC. Despite being favorites, PSG struggled to convert chances into goals and are now in danger of early elimination.
The only goal of the game came in the 36th minute when Igor Jesus calmly finished a brilliant pass from Jefferson Savarino. His composed strike sealed the match and earned Botafogo a massive win.
Although PSG dominated the game with around 75% possession and attempted 14 shots, only two were on target. Botafogo’s goalkeeper John stood strong and kept a clean sheet with some fine saves throughout the match.
Luis Enrique, PSG’s coach, had decided to rest some of his star players and brought in new faces. However, that decision is now being criticized as the defeat puts PSG in a must-win situation. Botafogo coach Renato Paiva expressed joy over the win, saying that surprises are part of football and that his team believed in the impossible.
This result takes Botafogo to the top of Group B with 6 points from two matches. PSG and Atletico Madrid both have 3 points. In the final group match, PSG must beat Seattle Sounders to have any hope of qualifying. Atletico Madrid will also need a victory against Botafogo to stay in the race.
