CAN Directed to Suspend NPL Activities Until Anti-Corruption Inquiry Completes

The National Sports Council (NSC) formed an investigation team to look into the organization of the first edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The team has now asked the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to provide clear answers about the NPL as soon as possible.

In a letter sent on Sunday, the investigation team instructed CAN not to engage in any work related to the second edition of the NPL until the anti-corruption commission’s investigation is completed.

Previously, the investigation team had also sent letters to CAN requesting explanations on various issues. This time, the letter was stronger in tone, asking CAN to cooperate fully by providing clear answers regarding complaints filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission. Until the investigation is over, CAN is told not to proceed with any NPL-related activities.

The letter addressed to CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand states:
“Provide clear responses to the complaints filed at the Anti-Corruption Commission. The investigation team will submit its report. Until the commission completes its investigation, do not undertake or allow any work related to the Nepal Premier League.”

The first edition of the Nepal Premier League was held from mid-December to late December 2024 at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Although the event was a grand success, complaints of irregularities and failure to publicly share financial accounts were filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Even six months after the first edition ended, financial details have not been made public. Members within CAN have also written letters of complaint to the leadership.

CAN President Chand confirmed receiving the investigation team’s letter and said he has asked CAN Secretary and NPL Governing Council coordinator Paras Khadka to respond promptly.

Chand said, “The letter was addressed to me, but it should have been sent to the institution responsible for the NPL. I have told the concerned person to submit the answers quickly.”

He also mentioned that CAN’s board meeting will be held at the end of July, where all matters will be discussed and then shared with the government and Rakhap.

Chand claims the second edition of the NPL will be even grander and sees no reason to stop the league.

This is not the first time the investigation team has sent a letter to CAN. Earlier, on May 9, 2025, the team had requested documents from CAN but was not satisfied with the responses, prompting this latest letter.

Following complaints of financial irregularities related to the first NPL, the Ministry of Youth and Sports formed an investigation team led by Ranjana Pradhan from Rakhap to look into the matter.

The team had asked CAN to provide all necessary documents and information related to the NPL. However, since CAN’s submissions were incomplete or unclear, the team sent another letter on June 5, 2025, demanding clearer information.

The letter warns that if satisfactory answers are not provided, legal action will be taken.

Though the first edition of the NPL was held successfully and gained international attention, ongoing internal disputes have raised doubts about whether the second edition will take place as scheduled.
