Belgium’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign began with a heart-racing 4-3 win over Wales, as Kevin De Bruyne saves Belgium with a late winner in the 88th minute. The Red Devils looked to be in complete control after a stunning 3-0 start, but nearly let the game slip before De Bruyne stepped up.
Belgium dominated the early stages in Brussels. Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Kevin De Bruyne’s shot hit Brennan Johnson’s arm, marking Lukaku’s 89th international goal. Soon after, Youri Tielemans slotted in Belgium’s second following a clever low cross from Maxime De Cuyper. Jeremy Doku made it 3-0 with a brilliant solo run and finish that left the Welsh defense stunned.
Just before the break, Wales got a controversial penalty after Matz Sels collided with Chris Mepham. Harry Wilson converted to cut the lead to 3-1 at halftime. That gave Wales momentum, and they came out fighting in the second half. Wilson then assisted Sorba Thomas to bring the score to 3-2, and Brennan Johnson completed the incredible comeback with a header in the 69th minute.
Belgium thought they had gone back in front through Lukaku, but his second goal was ruled out by VAR for the ball being out of play in the build-up. Moments later, Kevin De Bruyne sealed the win by volleying in Tielemans’ inch-perfect cross at the back post.
Despite the loss, Wales can take positives from the performance. Craig Bellamy’s first defeat as Wales manager ended their nine-match unbeaten streak, but their spirited comeback showed real potential. They remain second in Group J, one point behind leaders North Macedonia and three ahead of Belgium, who have two games in hand.
Only the top team qualifies directly for the World Cup, while the second-place team moves to the play-offs. For Belgium, this chaotic win could be the turning point they needed—and once again, Kevin De Bruyne saves Belgium when it matters most.
