Signe Gaupset Historic Double Leads Norway to Thrilling 4-3 Win Over Iceland

Signe Gaupset made history by becoming the youngest player to score twice in a UEFA Women’s European Championship match as she led Norway to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Iceland on Thursday. At 20 years and 22 days old, Gaupset broke the previous record held by Vivianne Miedema, who was 21 years and 22 days when she scored a double for the Netherlands in the 2017 final.

Gaupset was in sensational form, scoring both her goals within the first 26 minutes and setting up the other two goals for Norway, which were scored by Frida Maanum in the second half. Norway had already secured the top spot in Group G, while Iceland was already eliminated from the tournament.

Despite their elimination, Iceland showed great determination and took an early lead when Sveindís Jónsdóttir tapped in a rebound in the sixth minute. They fought back late in the game with two goals, including one by Hlín Eiríksdóttir in the 84th minute and a stoppage-time penalty by Glódís Viggósdóttir, awarded after Eiríksdóttir was fouled by Marit Bratberg Lund, who was sent off with a second yellow card.

Norway finished the group stage with a perfect nine points, five points clear of host nation Switzerland and Finland, who drew 1-1. Switzerland advanced due to a better goal difference, while Iceland ended at the bottom with zero points.

Next, Norway will face the runner-up of Group B—Spain, Italy, or Portugal—in the quarterfinals on July 16 in Geneva.
