Monterrey Dominate Urawa Red to Reach Club World Cup Knockout Stage

Monterrey beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 on Wednesday night at the Rose Bowl to reach the round of 16 in the FIFA Club World Cup. Monterrey showed their dominance early in the match with a strong 10-minute burst of goals in the first half, leaving the Japanese club without a chance to recover.

The opening goal came in the 30th minute when Nelson Deossa launched a stunning long-range strike from 35 yards out. Urawa goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa got a hand on it, but the power of the shot carried it into the net. Soon after a cooling break, Germán Berterame made it 2-0 with a low finish into the bottom right corner.

Jesús Corona added to the lead with a brilliant shot from distance that looped high and dropped straight into the net in the 39th minute. Monterrey’s control of the match was clear, and the scoring didn’t stop there.

Berterame struck again in stoppage time to score his second of the night, completing the 4-0 victory. Monterrey beat Urawa Red Diamonds with a confident and clinical performance, ending their Group E campaign in style.

With this win, Monterrey secured second place in Group E behind Inter Milan, who won their match 2-0 against River Plate in Seattle. Monterrey now move on to face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in Atlanta in the round of 16.

Urawa Red Diamonds had already been eliminated before this match after previous losses to River Plate and Inter Milan. Their exit was confirmed with this heavy defeat.

Only 14,312 fans attended the match at the Rose Bowl, a surprisingly low turnout for the 89,702-capacity stadium.
